UNIVERSITÄT POTSDAM - W2 Machine Learning and Data Compression

Founded in 1991, the University of Potsdam has firmly established itself in the scientific landscape and has become an outstanding economic factor and development engine for the region. It has a high level of third-party funding, has won several awards for teaching, and has a service-oriented administration and has received several awards for being familyfriendly. Around 22,000 students and 3,000 employees work at three locations – Am Neuen Palais, Griebnitzsee and Golm – at one of the most beautifully situated academic institutions in Germany. 

The Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute is one of the world’s leading research institutes for mobile and stationary communication networks, machine learning and data compression.

The research area of data compression covers topics from the fields of source coding and signal processing. A central research topic is the investigation and development of models and methods for the representation, local classification and prediction of data. Thus, the field of data compression is naturally closely related to the research field of machine learning. The task of the new professorship is to deepen and extend this connection and to gain new insight into research questions of both areas. This may lead to new data-driven methods for the transmission of image and video signals or to new methods in the field of compression and efficient inference of neural networks.

We are looking for an internationally recognized individual with an excellent track record of peer-reviewed publications in the field of machine learning and data compression, and who has also had success in the acquisition of external funding.

Active collaboration with the various research groups of the Institute of Computer Science and Computational Science, especially in the Joint Lab “Wireless and Embedded System Design”, is
expected, as well as the strengthening of the research focus on Data-Centric Sciences at the University of Potsdam. Furthermore, we expect relevant experience in leading a research group. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in industrial research.

The appointment to the professorship entails a teaching obligation of 2 semester hours per week at the Institute for Computer Science and Computational Science at the University of Potsdam. Participation in the master’s programs in Computational Science and Data Science is required.
